Congratulations to Jonny Kofoed from Assembly Ltd for Winning Best NZ Short at Doc Edge!

We are thrilled to announce that Jonny Kofoed from Assembly Ltd has won the prestigious Doc Edge award for Best NZ Short with his powerful film, "Diary of a Head Injury." This captivating 7-minute piece, which had its world premiere at the festival, explores the profound experience of a crash victim who, after suffering a brain bleed and concussion, grapples with the heartbreak, trauma, and confusion of losing connection with the only person they ever truly knew.

Inspired by writer Nick Worthington’s own motorcycle accident and documented symptoms, "Diary of a Head Injury" combines a rich mix of visual effects, animation, and symbolic imagery. Kofoed and Worthington, long-time collaborators with a shared passion for art and design, crafted the film using tools like Houdini, Maya, miniatures, filmed footage, and hand-drawn elements.

Jonny Kofoed reflects on the project:

My aim was to create an analogue feeling film that didn't literally mirror Nick's words. By using symbols and semiotics instead of traditional character animation, we aimed to tell the story through a unique design lens.

Nick Worthington adds:

The words needed a visual language that captured a world inside your head. Creating a scrapbook of drawn, found, imagined, atmospheric, and symbolic images was at the heart of the process.

Don't miss the chance to see this award-winning film as part of the Shorts 4 collection at the Doc Edge Virtual Cinema from 15 - 31 of July. Congratulations to Jonny and the team at Assembly Ltd for this awesome achievement!
